I had the same problem a few years ago and it ended up being an easy fix. I tapped in to the reverse light wire with an inline connector and ran a line to the appropriate spot in the 7 wire plug as per owners manual. E trailer has easy to read wiring diagrams on line that show different plugs and how they are wired.
