Border crossing- Bear spray?
This summer we will be traveling from Glacier N.P. to Banff. I was wondering if we will have any problems with carrying bear spray at border crossings.

Exception: Aerosol or similar dispensers that contain substances capable of repelling or subduing animals (e.g. dog or bear repellent) are not considered prohibited weapons if:
(i) the label of the container indicates specifically that it is for use against animals only; and
(ii) the provisions of the Pest Control Products Act are met.
(iii) In order for a device or dispenser to be considered to meet the above criteria, it must be apparent that the device was designed exclusively for the control or use against animals. The manufacturer’s label and specifications will be deemed as the design of the product. The misuse of these or any other similar device may nonetheless be punishable under other laws.
(iv) Please note that there is no minimum quantity or capacity requirements (in terms of grams or milliliters) in making the determination with respect to animal repellents.

Can I bring bear spray into the U.S.?
It is permissible to bring bear spray into the U.S., however, bear bangers (with explosive) are not permitted.
NOTE: Bear repellent is not considered prohibited in Canada if the label of the container indicates specific use against animals only and pest control provisions are met. For more information visit Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA).

What worked last year may not work this year.- Just read the instruction on the can. You have to be awfully close to that bear to hit it right. I do not think I would have the peace of mind to get the can out, aim it and shoot and hope for the best with a large bear charging at me.
- I have not done it, But I would try, and if they ask you be honest with them. And be ready to show it, if they want to see. You can always leave it with customs, if it is a problem. JMHO Gary
