Bps camping in southern New Mexico

To escape the south Texas heat,dw and I headed to the high elevations of southern new mexico. Got here to atown called datil, weather is gorgeous and the elk are bugle lying at first light each morning. Supposed to be in the mid thirty degrees sat night. Of course the fed govt mayhem has also shut down the national forest campgrounds where you self register and take all your stuff with you when leaving.
But, the datil gas station, grocery store, restrauant, also has RV spots for just eighteen dollars a night full service, very rustic. We are here through sunday as it is also the first week of elk hunting season. Should be entertaining. The restrauant has a great pound and a half t bone steak dinner for sixteen buck. The dw did not understand how it coul be that cheap, and I explained that the cow never left the mountain. Butchered, aged and served right here.

Stay loose, enjoy the situations and grow old happy

  • I am currently in silver city, nd had a great time at an antique market in the downtown area. Tomorrow we take the scenic ride up towards gila and understand that the fed park is closed but it should be a good ride. Weather warning on the local net suez fifty mile per hour this evening, and we have already prepared.

Noting that many nat parks are using traffic cones to obscure access, I might be in the mood to confiscate one as national park so vinegar that would be tied to the ladder on the back of the RV

  • Hi from AZ. . . sure hope you made it to the Pie-O-Neer in ,yes, it's true, Pietown,NM. Best pies on the planet, great folks and a fun time. Regards, Craig
  • There isn't a whole lot left in the semi-ghost town of Magdalena, but there is a small interesting museum in the library. Nearby are the ghost towns of Kelly and Riley.
  • Yep, too bad the Fed Shutdown has the BLM campground closed. A neat little BLM CG - Datil Wells on US 60.

East of Datil is the VLA (Very Large Array) between Datil & Magdalena. There is a nice shady pull out rest stop (no facilities) just before the VLA or maybe just past it. I spent one overnight there some years ago.

A little West of Datil, there is a city campground in Pie Town. Never stopped at however.

Pancho Villa SP is south of Deming right on the Mexican Border. North of Deming towards Silver City is City of Rocks State Park. I've never been to Pancho Villa, but have enjoyed out trips & stays at City of Rocks.

  • Sounds like a ton of fun! Wish I was in your shoes! Enjoy yourselves!!!
  • Be sure to take a look at the nearby VLA. Even if it's closed, you'll be able to see the amazing array. (However, if I'm not mistaken, the array is run with university money rather than federal, so at worst they'll be stopping scheduled experimental research funded by NSF, etc.)
