Brake buddy

I have an older Brake Buddy classic. I am going on a long trip and I just tested the unit. Everything works as it should but I noticed that the center button on the cigar lighter plug was very hot to the touch after I disconnected it. I don't remember this from past usage. Does anyone know if this is normal? The fuse did not blow so there is not a short.
Thanks, Jack
  • thank you all for your help. I will change out the plug.

  • Make sure your cig lighter socket circuit will be good for 15 amps. It it isn't you could burn up your compressor. Don't ask me how I know this.

Your electrical contacts should be clean and tight or the resistance will heat things up badly.
  • Does your plug have two wire bands on each side of it? They don't seat right in the opening causing resistance.

This type of plug was the older version and actually had a recall on it.

Mine would not seat properly leading one to believe something was wrong with the system itself when it wouldn't function when actually it was just the plug not seating right with those two stupid wire bands.

I just had the RV mobile repair guy come out and he cut the old one off and put a new cig plug on it. Never had a problem after that.
  • I have an older Brake Buddy Classic. I think the temperature of the plug would be a function of the length of time since the compressor last kicked on to apply brakes. You may have caught it just after a brake application.
