Different jurisdictions have different levels of diligence. We lived in an apartment building in Tampa and were moving to our first house. We had a portable DVD player in the apartment to entertain our daughter while we packed and moved stuff. On the last trip we found the portable DVD player missing. No forced entry, but the police came, sent a detective, dusted for prints, everything except round up everyone in a 500' radius - all for a $400 item.
By contrast, a gas station in NY I knew got broken into, had cash, tools, and other stuff stolen, and all they got was a phone call with a report number. No response at all.
