No the white does not go to ground. A switch breaks a circuit only.
E-trailer has diagrams on how to wire a brakeaway switch. Basically the positive 12VDC wire coming from the trailer battery is connected directly to one end of the brakeaway switch. The other end of the brakeaway switch is connected to the wire that is going to the trailer brakes.
When hooked correctly, with the pin in the brakeaway switch (Which is open)you are able to drive. If the pin is pulled the brakeaway switch closes and applies 12VDC to the brake magnets and stops the trailer.
