Bringing teenagers...leave tech at home or no?

My wife has commented numerous times about how our 16yr old has much more personality when her phone is taken away. Last Memorial Day weekend, we went to a CG out in the sticks and didn't have a cell signal. She was miserable being disconnected from her peeps. Personally, i think its sad how these teenagers let their phone run their lives. I'm 51 and maybe i'm turning into an old fart!!!!
