Good luck! I think you can encourage it, but until their mother steps up, it will be hard to "demand" no tech.
This past weekend, we towed the pontoon 7 hours to my husband's daughters' place to spend a few days out on the lake. When the 13 year old stepped on the boat with only his phone in his hands and a panicked look on his face over where to safely place it in close proximity. My husband told him he wasn't going to watch him clutch that *^$@ thing all day. Showed him the dry space we keep ours (out of sight and mind) And told him to leave it there. The kid was happily occupied all day with fishing and swimming ... only asked about a phone to take a picture of his fish. The parents on the other hand, checked theirs ever time it made a noise or it flashed through their brains that it had been 60 seconds since they checked it last.
So I repeat the previous suggestion...keep them near water!!!!!! The thought of losing that "life-line" long term will be enough to get them to put it down a bit.
It's amazing when they disconnect that there's a whole real world out there lol
The GF dropped her phone a couple weekends ago and cracked the screen. totally unusable. She said she had to wait for 2 weeks to get a new one cause she couldn't afford it. I told her no way, she will have a new phone in 2 days. Shes too addicted. She said the break would be good.
Sure enough, 2 days later she got the screen replaced lol. Claimed her kids might need to get a hold of her. I told her they could use my phone meanwhile.
I am just as addicted to tech, but I also can disconnect when need be. I streamed Pandora on my phone last camping trip for 2 days. My phones battery lasted TWO WHOLE DAYS even streaming music. I have a screen shot showing no charge for 48 hours. I did use it occasional when I was really bored or in the bathroom.
I realize it's the newest fad and way to communicate, but people can't communicate anymore. Her 2 older ones talk to me more through text than face to face. I enjoy social media as much as the next person in their 30s, but, I also like a break from it too. Everyone doesn't need to know what I am doing 24 hours a day.... well unless it's really cool and it will make someone jealous :)
