I've always brought my computer, smart phones, etc. on camping trips. I like taking and sharing photos, and keeping in touch. I've also used my devices as reference: What's that bird? What kind of trailer is that? Where's the nearest RV parts store?, weather updates, etc.
IMO: If I was taking someone camping that had no experience camping: I would let them bring whatever would make them feel comfortable. I would try to make it the best trip ever-so they would want to go again. If they want to spend the whole trip glued to their phone, fine. I'm sure some of the experience would make an impression on them-whether it's noticeable right away, or not.
