I agree no phones during meals. We tend to think that teens are just fooling around chatting, playing games, and wasting time on their phones....which they do of course...but the 'net is also how they get their news and read articles that interest them. Nobody under the age of 30 reads a newspaper or magazine anymore.
Teens are socially awkward and developing into their own people at those ages. Not having a phone around is no guarantee that they will want to talk to you....
When we camped at other non-beach locations, we would plan stuff to do in the mornings and early afternoon, then give everybody some alone time before dinner. The most you can hope for is to plan activities and expose the kids to all of the non-digital activities that you can do when camping...but you can't make them like it. Remember that they are growing up to be their own people, and just because you like camping doesn't that they will like camping.
