Bubblling Toilet Followup - and a Suprise...

Hi Everyone
Back in July we asked for information on stopping our toilet from bubbling.

http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27837613.cfm

There were lots of suggestions and we tried many of them. Today we tried the most "rigorous" of them all, putting a hose down the vent pipe and washing it out. I pulled the rig out of the shed (after putting on the receiver) climbed up on the roof, unscrewed the vent cap (1/4 inch screws - another trip down the ladder) finally got the hose up on the roof, and squeezed the handle on the high pressure nozzle. (Oh, I forgot to mention the buckets to carry off the liquid in the "empty" tank, About 6 gallons.) Well then came the surprise. Lots of little brown "bits" about an inch across with what appears to be brown fungus (or fungi) growing on them! Argh!!! We flushed the tank @ about 5 gallons a time, 3 or 4 times, till they stopped coming out and the water ran clean. Then I tried the "Sana T Blowout" hose connection that is supposed to clean the electrodes and tank. 80 to 100 psi went into the connection, and nothing. Nada. Checked the hose for kinks, turned the water on and off, removed and reattached the hose and tried again. Again, nothing although the hose was beginning to balloon from the pressure. Finally I heard a slight hissing and them a surge of spray as the nozzle cleared. More white and brown gunk and several more trips the septic tank dump. Finally no more "stuff" came out and I closed the valve.
What was the white fungus looking stuff? It looking like it had been growing on the walls of the tank. We use the normal deodorizers and tank "treatments". I never dreamed that something could possibly grow in the tank. Ideas folks?
Regards
Bill

. . . just need to fill tank full and add bleach (1/4 cup per 15 gallons) and let it sit overnight then dump/rinse tank.

In this case, better make that 1/2 cup per 15 gallons.

Am doing so as soon as I finish this post.
    thanks

  • I second the Unique digester. Bought it a Quartzsite about 4 years ago, been using it ever since.
  • I was having the same problem. I was introduced to Unique Digest IT. This will eat that stuff out in about 12 to 24 hours. It's a bacteria, and will not harm anything except the yuck. I use it all the time now and no more problems.
  • This is why we use the fill and flush method with the Sani flush valve every time we empty the black tank. Fill the remaining volume of the tank with water and switch vale to gray tank and ffill to full volume or vice verse. Then pressure back to black tank and open valve slowly and let the tank get cleaned. When water starts to come out clear let it run five minutes more. Switch to gray tank and turn on the water and open sewerr valve slowly. let drain and let flush five minutes longer after water clears. Snesors are clean as well as tank. Put about five gallons back in black tank with chemicals, and some amout perhaps a gallon in gray tank and chemicals. last flush for storage don't put any water back in unless you plan pn using it again in a reasonable time. The chemicals keep the bugs from developing. Calgonite will help clean sensors and tanks when it shoshes around going down the road with the five gallons or with sewage in it. Flushing is really important to keep as many problems away as possible on our rigs.

  • I also subscribe to the "get a bigger hammer" theory when nothing else is working. It's like riding snowmachines in really deep powder. If you're about to get stuck, squeeze the throttle all the way and hang on. 9 out of 10 time it will get you out of the mess you're in. The 10th time, well, you're then really in trouble.

  • 50lbs of water pressure was doing nothing at all. And as far as I am concerned the "spray nozzle" is a mainly a useless device that never cleans much. It was "expendable" although a blown line was a worry. Today, after 5 years, it finally proved useful, and then it was clogged. I realize that 40 psi is the design pressure for RV systems. We had a problem, and the regular solutions were NOT working. Time for a bigger hammer. Sometimes you have to gamble.

  • Ideas......you bet
FIRST....stop putting 80-100# into your rig even the flush connection. You will blow out the anti-siphon/back flow preventor and cause a big flood inside your rv.
And if you don't blow it out you will probably blow a fitting off on tank sprayer and make it useless.....50# MAX is all you need. Use a water pressure regulator

As for the 'stuff' growing in tank....hummmmmm
Could be fungus, could be mold, could be scum.....just need to fill tank full and add bleach (1/4 cup per 15 gallons) and let it sit overnight then dump/rinse tank.

Oh.I take it that vent line is now clear
