Buying out of state, registration and taxes?

I'm in AZ and looking at buying in NV. Dealer said I would pay taxes in AZ when I register it and not in NV. Can anyone elaborate on this thats familiar with AZ or NV RV taxes and registration?

    The dealer is correct.

Most States have reciprocal agreements with other States that provide that sales taxes are due to the State where the buyer resides and registers the vehicle.

Ways of dealing with this vary- some States don't collect any sales tax on such transactions, while others collect the tax at time of purchase, supposedly forwarding to the buyer's "home State". In those cases, you just show proof of taxes already paid to the Registrar and that amount will be taken off your bill.

In all cases, you must pay the sales tax rate of your home State, regardless of where the rig was purchased.
  • We live in California and bought our mh in Arizona. They gave us a choice. Pay $1000 to have them drive it to CA for us to take possession and not have to pay Arizona sales tax.....or.....take possession in Arizona, pay Arizona sales tax and then drive the mh to California to register it and California would then honor the amount we paid Arizona if more than the California sales tax. If less than CA sales tax, would have to pay CA the difference.

Since the difference was less than $1000 (AZ tax was more than CA), we opted to pay the Arizona tax.

It will probably be the same for NV. As mentioned, call or go to the NV DMV website and get the info.

    Hope this helps

  • It also depends on the State that you are purchasing in. California makes you pay their State Tax if you take delivery in California and drive even 1 mile on their roads.

We purchased an RV in California. Had to pay a driver to drive the MH to the Nevada border, hire a Notary in Nevada that processed the paperwork proving that took delivery in Nevada. Then we drove to the nearest RV park and sent all our paperwork and the required paperwork from the State of Wa. plus a Check for the Sales Tax to Washington State with a return overnight envelope and the registration, title, license plates were returned to us and then we were on our way.

Had we Paid the Sales Tax in California, we would not have had to repay it in Washington, but we wanted to keep the tax money in our own State.

So you will need to check with your State and the STate that you are purchasing. California doesn't care where you live. If you take possession, you will pay their tax.

Bought in IL and taxed in KY and that was the way it worked here. Expect the dealer should know. Typically the state you live in wants the taxes. :)
  • these type of questions pop up all the time .heres the facts, each state has there own rules.call your dmv and ask they,ll tell you exactly what to do. here in ohio we took the out of state paper work AND THE MH to the dmv office 15teen min it was all changed and on our way.
