Sadly, it isn't fake. We're in Ca right now, and they did just pass this added tax. The gas and diesel take effect 1 Nov, the additional vehicle registration (from $25 to $125) take effect 1 Jan.
To give you an I'dea of what prices are, we're in Pleasanton (east San Francisco Bay Area) and diesel is $2.97 to $3.09.
The roads here are the worst I've seen in quite some time. We came out of Las Vegas on I-15, to Ca 58, to I-5, and there were very few spots where I wasn't playing "chase the potholes".
They have the money, but since the answer is political, I won't say what the folks in Sacramento have to say. If we didn't have to be here to take care of some business, we wouldn't be here. Oh, and before any California residents say anything, both my wife and I are native, smart Califirnian's. We left!
