Place the pressure reducer in a pint of water that has been tested for lead. Let it soak for a week, then have the water tested for lead again. Has the lead level in the water increased? Is it above the recommended safe level?

Actually, those pressure reducers are pretty much useless. If you are concerned about water pressures, go to a plumbing supply house or hardware store and get a REAL pressure regulator and the necessary fittings to connect it to a hose. A "Forum Search" for "water pressure regulator" should net a plethora of information.
As for the California warnings, a box of most types of mushrooms have enough natural toxins and cancer causing chemicals to qualify for a warning!
