As regards the charge to the credit card. You authorized the charge when you gave them the card. The card is "insurance" against skippers and damage. Just like any hotel, most of which will not rent a room on a cash basis, no "insurance" regarding damage and skippers.
The whole situation seems like an unnecessary aggravation. Move on!
