I volunteer host at a nearby National Forest Service campground. Besides 60 some campsites, a pair of lakes, a beach, a few dozen picnic tables and BBQ grills, and a bunch of miles of hiking trails, this very popular park has exactly one paid full time staffer to run the place. Everything else is done by volunteers. For 20 hours a week we mow, clean the bath houses, haul trash from the cans to dumpsters, clean up the campsites and picnic areas, and direct traffic on busy weekends. Not to mention greet and answer questions and generally help campers and park visitors. Oh, and fix anything that breaks. We are also supposed to hang around the host site from friday afternoon to sunday evening. At a nearby state park which clearly has a much better budget, camp hosts only have to be present on the weekend. Paid staff do all that other stuff.
