Most of the camp hosts I've run into have been very good at doing the job they signed up for, but I have run into a couple that go a long way to giving the whole volunteer host program a bad name. It's a shame there isn't a good way to rate camp hosts that could be used for "future employment" in those positions. Some of the bad ones I've run into:
Got screamed at for picking a site at a NP late at nite in accordance with the posted instructions instead of checking in with the Camp Host so they could assign me a site.
Got screamed at for using the dump station that was unlocked because apparently there was a fee that needed to be paid even though there was no posting to that effect, nobody at the office and no instructions posted on how to deal with an unmanned office. The COE campground in this case was closed for repairs and the only people camped there were the camp hosts. I did pay the fee but I paid in cash - should have paid by CC or check just to see if the money actually got to the COE.
Stopped at a popular COE park and found it was totally booked for the entire summer. Did some investigation and discovered the Camp Hosts had formed a cartel where they were booking/reserving all the spots for their friends and camp hosts at other parks so they'd all have places to camp throughout the summer camping season.
