That's not true at all. Collecting down and dead wood on public land is perfectly legal, at least in CA. Just because I use a chainsaw doesn't mean I am out there felling trees. Just cutting fallen trees into manageable lengths. I've used a bow saw to do plenty of it too.
If your point is that there are some restrictions, fair enough. I'm responsible enough to know the regulations where I camp. And since we have a few million acres of BLM and Forest Service camping opportunities, your experience in Michigan is obviously different. All I said was, I don't buy firewood. If you can't, don't want to, ill equipped to do so, or just plain too lazy to collect wood, fine by me. It's your money.
