Camp host rant

So decided this last weekend to head north for one last camping trip of the season. As temps are slowly dropping and its time to winterize.

Wound up leaving a bit late Fri. night and got to the camp ground around 9. So backed in and hit the sack. Got up early and set up the camper. Then walked over to see how to get some wood for Sat. night. Sign stated see camp host for key. By this time everyone was up and moving in the camp ground. Walk over to host's site and no one to be found and no vehicle. So I figured I'd be able to track them down later in the afternoon.

So load the dog in the truck and take off to do some exploring. Got back to the campground around 3 or so. Walk over to host's site and still no one to be found. Called the host phone number I found on the check in station, no answer. So I kept an eye out for the host and hour after hour go by, sun goes down and still no host. In the mean time I did check out a few other sources that normally have wood but they were out for the season.

Eventually I just gave up, no sitting around a fire for me to night. So I hunkered down in the camper. Then while taking the dog for his last walk for the night well after 9. A truck pull's into the host site. Well at that point I was a bit irritated.

Is this normal for camp ground host's to be MIA?
Especially on a busy Sat. at a campground.
What should I have done differently?

  • We were volunteer camphosts for the first year fulltiming. Not worth a campsite. A camphost is only off duty when he/she is away from the campground, the off duty sign is meaningless. This is the end of the season, do you know the BS this host has dealed with the last 5 months, no you just wanted a fire, so screw the camphost he/she should be there just for you.
You have any idea how many extra hours this host has put in over the required number. I assure you it's plenty.
  • I keep a few Dura Flame logs in the HTT for it I run out of wood. Maybe he was out goofing off. Maybe he had an emergency. Maybe he was taking someont to the hospital. Maybe Maybe Maybe. Let it go my friend.
  • That's one of the reasons we always carry a propane fire pit. We can always have a fire even if we can't find wood, or wood fires are prohibited.

  • Depends. Typically volunteer camp host positions as for a set number of hours a day, usually 5 days a week. Medical emergencies, days off, things happen. We are generally around all day, but there has been times when we had to go to the store or something. We try to leave a note. We also have a sign stating on or off duty.
  • This was a township run campground on Lake Superior. And is one that stays open as late as they can. While other private campgrounds have most likely shut down by now.
  • Was this a private or government park?

If I'm not mistaken, volunteer season is over here in Michigan, could be the same for Wisconsin? I'm guessing the more favored hosts are allowed to leave their rigs setup in the park for personal use in the off season?
  • Sometimes things happen. Maybe they had a family emergency they had to attend to. Life's to short to worry about the little things. Just enjoy the time you had to camp and enjoy life. : )
