I've been visiting a lot of National Parks lately and have been astonished at how people trash the facilities, Specifically, the camp sink and restrooms. Camp sinks routinely have food scraps in them...

Yeah, I think it all started when parents stopped spanking their kids.
Maybe a generalization and yes... but I didn't spank my kids and my kids are extremely respectful, do well in school and per the littering part, I lead by example and comment on litter and the disgusting people who do that (and pick it up). I was taught to be respectful and so are my kids. It is an individual thing... unfortunately.
I will say though that getting out on trail in CO, it is rare to see litter, especially the further you get from the Denver metro area. A majority of people who use the trail systems are living here for the great outdoors and most treat it with respect. So, there is some hope.
