Folks live within their own paradigms ranging between "safety in numbers" to the "hermit". Camping, as in life, is full of risks. One of which is our fellow man. In the spirit of the quote in the OP's post, history is replete with reports of man's inhumanity to man; ex. Boston Marathon, Newtown school shooting, Aurora theater shooting, Virginia Tech massacre, and even the Aug. 2011 fatal stabbing at Ocean Lakes Campground in Myrtle Bch., SC. The list goes on. So much for "safety in numbers" and/or visiting "safe" venues.
Criminality requires intent and opportunity. Considering all the money we spend on the criminal justice system with it's high recidivism rate, I hold no faith in controlling intent. That leaves me with the task of reducing opportunity. I can't hit a target I can't see and that works both ways. I'm quite comfortable camping/boondocking alone. I will concede that while I've been to Canada, all of my camping has been in the good ol' USA. Wish you the best, Lots of Stuff, in your transitioning back to the more traditional forms of travel.
