Was tent camping in Northern NY in the 70s and early in the morning a State Trooper woke us up and told us to pack up and leave within the hour. Said he would be back through in a few minutes to help if we needed it (our car was parked a couple hundred feet down the trail). When he asked him why he told us there had been some trouble in the area and they were clearing out everyone as a precaution. He came back in a few minutes and stayed with us until we were packed and on our way. Leaving the area we were stopped twice and they made us open our trunk.
When we got home we found out that someone had randomly killed a camper during the night about a quarter mile from where we were camped and they were still looking for him. He was a serial killer and it turned out to be one of the biggest manhunts in New York State history.
Since then not much has phased me camping but I am a lite sleeper now.
