We are also Passport America members and would never let our membership lapse. We have used it over and over. Even if the park is not great, many times you are just needing a place to stop for the night and paying less than $20 (sometimes as low as $10) per night just makes sense. There are also some very nice parks that you may want to stay at for the time allowed. There are parks that also allow longer stays with the discount, not all have all the limitations. You can go to passportamerica.com and search campgrounds without being a member. That should give you an idea if it would work for where you want to travel.
