Well.. years ago.. Back in the days of of the fictional Matt Dillion (TV/Radio Show Gunsmoke, The radio show starred William Conrad). Well everybody was packing and those who offended... Often ceased to offend, Thus courtesy was common..
But alas, those days are gone, and thus, Common Courtesy, is now rather uncommon.. That said, I've been known to hold a door for someone entering or leaving a building or room or stairwell behind me..
And "Gunsmoke" was pure fiction. The old west was hardly full of people who were polite. The miners consistently killed and stole from rival miners. The cattlemen actively attacked the "sodbusters". They all killed and ran off the Native Indians. The lawmen of the day were often corrupt and many ran their towns and territories like their own private empires. The fact is, the good ole days were rarely that good.
