Camping in Cold Weather

You should be OK - Run your hot water heater for 30-60 minutes before bed and it will keep the water warm all night. I have a 3 season motorhome and have never had a problem with nighttime temps in the 20's. Have a great trip!

When we are camping in low temperatures, anyone who gets up at night flushes the toilet and runs water thru each faucet. The anyone is the one of us who has to get up at least once a night if not more. The other one sleeps right thru it.

Will you be running a generator, or do you plan to survive on the battery bank? At 20f capacity is down by quite a bit.

We go skiing to Mammoth or Big Bear every February. In our Class A we keep the heat set like you. We do stay where we have electricity hook ups at the minimum. We do use rigid insulation for the front window. Do keep your cabinet doors open where the plumbing runs to make sure warm air gets to the pipes.

We've already had two weekend trips here with those temps and no problems. We don't have tank heaters and our tanks never froze; there is enough heat coming from the heated living space to keep the tank and water lines above freezing at those temps.

I have camped in temps in the low 20s with my FW. Mine is a 4-season, with heated belly, but no heat pads in tanks. Mine gets some heat from the ducts that run through the insulated belly.

Mine worked just great. I had plenty of heat in the coach too. I enjoy camping in the colder night, warmer day temps.

Be sure to leave your cabinet doors (under sinks) open at night. Otherwise those pipes may freeze. The last time it happened to me it didn't take long to thaw in the morning but it was an inconvenience.

:?I never even heard of heating pads. I will look into it. Does it just apply around the holding tank underneath? Looking under the trailer, a '05 Thor Jazz 5'er, the only exposed pipes I see are the gray and black dump pipes. In the storage compartment there are hot and cold heater lines partially exposed.
I did this trip before and remember my water froze a little bit but no damage. At the time my batteries were bad and the heat cut out in the evening so it got cold in the trailer. New batteries now. Also I won't be hooked up to water, just using the fresh water tank.

Does your 5'er have heated and enclosed tanks, pipes, exterior shower and fill and dump valves? If so you shouldn't have an issue with high 20s. A lot of 5'ers are designed and built for cold weather.
