Not sure what you mean by "false neutral". If your transfer case has a lever that allows you to put it in neutral....then you should be good to go. Being an 1989, Remco doesn't go back that far so can't check with them (at least on the website).
We towed a 1986 4x4 Toyota PU for years and all we did was put the transfer case in neutral and turn the key to ACC (to unlock the steering wheel).
