At nearly every campground I've visited I've seen half tons towing fifths, or carrying large truck campers.
There's nothing stopping one from doing either, and todays engines are more than capable.
How white do you want your knuckles to be when conditions are not ideal is the real limitation.
Also expect to spend a lot more maintaining an over worked vehicle. the various load carrying and power transmission mechanics will all wear faster operating outside their design specifications.
That's what I've learned, having bought one of those tow with anything trailers.
