So can we say Jayco is being misleading when calling these "half-ton towable"? Technically possible, but in the real world with truck and trailer loaded, it's a no-go?
No, not at all. IMO the problem is with 1/2 ton truck owners who seem to think all 1/2 ton trucks have the same towing capability as their truck
There are several 1/2 ton trucks out here that can tow a 10k gross weight 5th wheel trailer.
The older F150HD with 8200 GVWR package or the new 7850 GVWR package both with the larger 4800 RAWR. These trucks are good for around 2400-2500 lb rear axle payload.
And don't forget GMs '00-'06 1500HD with a 8600 gvwr and 6000 RAWR load E tires and wheels 6.0 engine 10k-11k tow ratings and 3000 lb payloads.
And the mid '00s 1500 Dodge Mega Cab with its 8510 GVWR and 6010 RAWR load E tires and wheels 5.7 Hemi 3.90 gears and good for a 2800-3000 lb payload.
One half ton trucks have GVWRs ranging from a small 6xxx up to 8600 lbs......with rear axle from a very small 3400 lbs on up to a 10.5" full floater 6000 rated axles.
Will all 1/2 ton trucks tow a 10k 5er...nope. But a 1/2 ton truck with the proper RAWR and GVWR or modified for that purpose will have no problems.
Ford has a F150HD 7850 gvwr/4800rawr made for that purpose.
The max tow with those small 4000-4400 RAWR numbers may not work. Don't be fooled by the F150 smaller max tow package.
