I tow one of the heavier 1/2 ton towables on the market (10400 GVWR) and IMO you need at least a 3/4 ton truck, otherwise you'll be over your GAWR pretty quick. Can it be done, yes but you'll be stressing on numbers as you'll be so close and to be honest above 8000lbs most 1/2 ton are simply too softly sprung and brakes are too undersized to really perform and last like you want them too.
