Canadians - medical coverage while travelling in the US

Woke up the other day and discovered I'm now in my 60s. Not sure where all the time went, but it is what it is... :(

We've been using Pacific Blue Cross for medical coverage and we've had to pay more because of my age but now they want to double the rate because I have prostate cancer (in the lowest risk category, being managed and no surgery needed). Now they want to double the premium because of this however anything related to it will not be covered. Asked them why we would have to pay double the rate now for something that is not covered - that's just what they do with no justification and refer to my age.

Is anyone using another company that is more reasonable? I also have a few other long standing chronic conditions that are excluded but not an issue as they have been well managed for a long time.

  • If you do only short trips Affinity Credit Union has a Gold Master Card that comes with a 5000.00 line of credit. It covers you for 30 days at a time and is valid to age 75. Cost is $90 per year.

CAA now sells medical insurace on a trip by trip basis. I top up the 30 days from Affinity. It is NOT cheap, but it appears to not have all the loop holes of other medical coverage.
  • I know this is no help. You will be hard pressed to find a carrier who will cover any pre-existing condition.
