Can't get unhitched!

We have a 2015 2500 Dodge Ram truck that we use to pull our 5er. We helped our son out by hitching up his TT and moving it to our farm. Now we can't get it unhitched. Our truck sits up high like the new trucks do and when we raise the tongue jack up the hitch on the truck keeps raising up too. We can't get the trailer high enough to clear the hitch. Any suggestions? I feel I'm missing something obvious.

  • Put your truck in neutral, if that doesn't help drive toward the back a little to see if it eases the tension. All else fails, pull the pin as others described. Good luck
  • Get some pressure off by lifting up some then pull the pin out of your hitch. Drive the truck forward and let the hitch come out. Once that is done you can figure out why they won't come apart a bit easier.
Have done that once or twice. The mechanism inside got hung up.
  • Pull the hitch pin in the receiver.Smack it out with a hammer, if its jammed and wont come out it means you have either gone to far jacking it up or not enough. try a couple of 4x4s under the tongue jack. once you knock the hitch pin out, drive away. Now your un hitched,, with out pressure on the hitch now you should be able to release it.

A good set of Hammers is what you need!!
  • Jockey truck slightly forward and backward.
But when that happens to us, I just use the electric tongue jack to force it off.
  • If a thick block doesn't work, the ball is in a bind. Have you went all the way down and back up? As soon as the truck starts to rise it's time to stand on the bumper and release the ball.
  • Maybe the ball is hung up and you can wiggle it around enough to loosen it. Surely you had it high enough to get it hooked, so it just sounds like something is hung up. Maybe loosen up the lock.
  • Maybe try putting some weight on the bumper of the truck to bring it down? I moved a friends tt, I have a fiver and the same thing happened. She sat on the bumper of the truck and it lowered it just enough. No, she is not heavy...lol.
