  • Riverbend RV Park is about half way between Brevard and Cashiers just off Hwy 64 on Hwy 281 (www.riverbendrvresortnc.com for map and pics)...small park (only 20 or so sites, but very nice)...we're heading there next week for the month of July.

thanx to terry and shay we have moved our plans and go to the boone area for cooler climate. this is a part of nc that we have not been in and think that we would have a good time exploring the blue ridge parkway and surrounding areas. going to write the local chambers of c today to get info and maps. thanx again terry and shay. bobby
  • It was in the 90/s here not too long ago terryallan

Hwy 64 is fun to drive in with a small car, but if you have someone who doesn't like steep drop offs and tight roads/curves, then I would avoid it between Franklin and highlands. I was in a small vehicle and had to slowly edge around a curve with a class c coming the other way. Only thing keeping us from going off the side of the mountain was about a foot or so tall stone wall or something. Was years ago and can't remember exactly what it was, but it even alarmed me a little and it takes a good bit to that.

You must have been in Wilmington, you were not in Boone.

In all honesty. You ain't gonna dodge the heat there. To find the cool in the summer. You really need to come to the NC High Country. Up around Blowing Rock. Linville, and Boone. I would suggest Raccoone Holler in Glendale Springs, Flintlock Family CG near Boone, Or Bonne KOA. You may also try Toe River CG, near Spruce Pines. There is also Honey Bear, near Boone. And there is Secluded Valley Near Linville.

With highs in the 70s, and lows in the 50s. We have never had to use AC in the summer. And we have camper up there for 30 years. Even when it was 100 degrees down here. It was blanket weather up there.

I don't know why, But the Northern Mountain area, Is much cooler than the Southern Mountain area. Come on up.
  • x 2 on the roads. Rt 64 from Hendersonville to Brevard is good but west of Brevard there are some sharp curves. Be cautious but it can be done.
  • you are going to have some curves to get there~ We like River Vista in Dillard just down the side of the mountain from Highlands. The road up to Cashiers is a pain if you are any length - doable, but no fun for you or all the people behind you.
If you have time for a longer trip, try Meadows of Dan, Virginia. Right on the BRP and cool nearly all year. This is where we head when the temps get unbearable. CG is called *strangely enough* Meadows of Dan CG
