Caulk and cleaning

I'm about to tackle, bit by bit, re-caulking seams on the MH. Most are in fine shape, but a few look like they could use reinforcement. Almost all of them (I'm talking about seems on the body of the MH) are blackened, I assume by road grime. Appearance aside, should this grime be removed before new caulk is applied to small cracks? If so, how?

Thanks!

  • Just did battle with mold & mildew yesterday but it was on boat fenders that have been stored & not used in 3 years.

Sometimes simple cheap stuff works really well. For me it was cheap bleach put on with a soft brush with minimal scrubbing. I'd try bleach on RV calking too but keep in mind that it will most likely take off any wax on the sides as it is washed off as some of the other cleaners are likley to do also.

It is the type of job where you start at the top & work your way down knowing that you have a big job ahead of you.

Got a neat trick for recaulking if you want it nice & neat. Tape off each side of seam. Apply the caulk. If you want it really neat, instead of using your finger use an ice cube to run along the seam. Remove the tape before it skins so that the edge can self feather.

The average builder does not have time for this sort of detail but you see it on upmarket boats.
  • You should be able to get the Jomax at Home Depot! We have a place in Bellingham called Hardware Sales that has most everything as well.

Hi SH. Where do you buy these products? I can't seem to find them around here and I see you are right across the border from us. Thanks very much.
