Caution

The Ford Dealer sent our Ford Edge St to Sun Valley Bumpers to install the towing gear. Bad experience all around, I won;t go into except....they did not even try to adjust air brake cylinder.
Result pulling away, after from the RV wash after hooking up the rig started jerking and then we saw smoke from the Edge.
The front brakes were on fire.
Too it back after unhooking and makign sure everything was operating properly to Sun Valley...They said make an appointment. That would mean at least a week wait.
Took it to Trotters and he set it up properly and it worked fine. now on the way out of town near Seligman, stopped the rig to use the facilities. Started back up and about the time we reached the exit smoke from the Edge's tires.
Four tires all destroyed with parts of the threads around the axles.
It had electronically shifted into park.
Sitting at Ford right now. Seems this is a problem with other edge STs.
If Ford can't or won't fix it...will they replace it with one we can agree on and not lose any money.
  • The brake problem was rectified...However the transmission electronically shifted into park when we started out after stopping later and destroyed the tires.
Service Mgr said it was the Bumpers whatever and no Fords. He had my wife confused, deliberately I think. he called her instead of me and she did not call me. Wife is stressed out as I am over 70,000.00 on vehicle and RV repairs this trip including the new Edge.
So they didn't provide a vehicle and wife broke down and didn't call me so we sit here at a Relatives. And. I'm not sure I can handle this bad situation with Ford, after all we have been though, without coming unglued.
  • Good point and not clear. First time the front brakes were on fire. Aux brake problem?

Second time all 4 tires destroyed and it was in park and is a known Ford problem.

If it's a Ford problem can they wiggle out of it for say improper setup or something else? Based on my tranny experience they will try. Document and take pictures of everything. Have a very complete detailed log for you. Use it and don't give them conflicting information.

Ford did successfully fix my tranny only when I gave them the details on their boched repair. And it was driven hard for 250K miles before he sold it.
  • I think the OP is asking about the fact that the Edge automatically shifted into Park.

In any case, as a previous poster said, that's something he will need to work out with Ford, and probably not at the dealer level.
  • Cliffs Welding in Mesa has a reputation for quality expensive work for this type of installation.
  • Not sure why you went to Ford but I'd expect them to deny all responsibility and suggest you contact the bumper guys.

In 2004 I (and others) was having a problem with a box brake. I installed a brake light on the towed dash that was visible in the rear view mirror. The problem was resolved but it took time. Current rig has a cab brake light that is activated by the toed brakes, but no issues since the fix and no longer have a box brake.

Keep us informed but I doubt Ford will fix it and certainly they won't replace it.
  • Not clear on what happened exactly. Is it not your responsibility to make sure your air brake cylinder is adjusted correctly?
    Or am I missing something?
  • If Ford can't or won't fix it...will they replace it with one we can agree on and not lose any money.

No one but the Ford dealer can answer that question.
