I think it's mostly hype. We've got 50,000 miles towing over the last 10yrs and only had one tire failure but I don't blame the tire, the leaf spring broke and dug into the side of the tire.
Likewise, usually buy off brand tires for the truck. Typically get 50,000miles or more out of a set. Never had a blow out for that either.
