choosing a state - advice needed

Dear all,

My wife and I are intending to buy a MH and the question has come up of State Residence.
We are French and live in France but we are accustomed to rent each year a RV in USA for at least one month. We have been doing that the last 14 years.
As in a few month we will become "young" retirees we would like to buy a used RV and spend 3 to 6 months (maybe more) per year in USA, hitting the roads.

So I guess we need to select a home base somewhere in USA in order to have the vehicle licensing and registration there.

I'm wondering if it would be possible to buy a MH in one State, pay the sales taxes in another one (a State that is most beneficial for us) and have the vehicle licensing and registration in that State.
Any other advises would be very appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Best
Jacky

  • Do you have any friends or relatives that have a U.S. address? If so, you might want ask them to use their address for mailing purposes. I worked for a department of motor vehicles during my working years and most states will not process vehicle titles of ownership and registration without a physical address. You can use a post office box address for mailing, but in Michigan you also needed a physical address listed on the ownership documents.

In most states where you purchase a vehicle, but reside in another state, you can apply for an in-transit permit in the selling state. In doing so you are usually exempt from paying tax in the selling state, but expected to pay tax in your residence state.

As mentioned by a previous poster, there are some states where you can be listed as a "resident". As I recall South Dakota was one that was mentioned most often. Montana may have been another. I don't know how you do this though. Below is the website ccsnola posted.

  • Get info from Ron at 'My Home Address' in South Dakota - they are MOST helpful and can assist with the whole process.

    Jackie,
I think you can do what you want to do. I almost bought a trailer from RVwholesalers on the East Cost and it would be shipped to the West Coast to California. They would collect California Sales Tax during the transaction.
  • I think such a plan would work as long as both states cooperate. Neighboring states (ones that touch each other) are more likely to do so, as they are used to having sales tax situations come up more frequently. That said, some states insist on getting their own piece of the pie, so to speak, and you could end up, with some combinations, paying sales tax in both places.

For instance, we bought our trailer in Utah but live in Idaho and registered it in Idaho. These two states cooperate with each other, so we paid no sales tax to Utah and paid sales tax when we registered the trailer in Idaho. There was a minor charge (I believe it was something under $70) to get a temporary registration tag in Utah, which allowed us to pull the trailer home.
