Class C vs Class A gas driving comfort

We are contemplating moving from our 2003 Southwind Class A gas to a new 2016 Forest River Forester 3011 on the Ford Chassis

We had a 2004 Four Winds 5000 28A before buying our first Class A. It seems to me that the Class C was quieter and more comfortable on the highway than the four Class A motorhomes we have had since.

We had a Newmar Kountry Star diesel for awhile. It was very nice and quiet on the road, but the handling was no better than the gas units we have had.

Can anyone offer and insight as the handling, driving comfort, and road noise in a new Class C vs a class A gas unit?

Thanks

  • Having had a Class "C" 22 footer and a 35' class A now, much prefer the Class A. Visibility and seating comfort makes longer drives more bearable.
  • This thread confirms my liking the Class C (Ford E450).

    - Easy to drive
    - Easy to park
    - Easy to find service
    - Safety of cab area.
-Quiet in cab area when driving. (No one in back while driving except for the occassional potty break or nap.)
    - Convenience of 2 more entry doors.

We're also looking at buying a newcRV soon and leaning toward sticking with works currently for us.
  • Class A all the way. nice and roomy, sort of like sitting in a lounge chair. not cramped into a pickup truck/van front seat. vision better. no comparison.

  • We have a class C. Wife likes it because of the safety factor of having airbags and the convenience of driver and passenger doors. I like it because it also handled much better than any of the short A's we drove of similar size. The cab over keeps us cooler and out of the sun and we use it as dry storage. Holds a lot of lightweight bedding, clothing, and other items. She hated driving the As but would probably get use to it (under protest). We have an E-450 chassis so finding service has been easy.
  • When we had our class C years ago I once drive 700 miles in a day. Driving our class A wears me out after about 300 miles. I'm 70 years old now. Perhaps it's my age and not the type of motorhome I'm driving that wears me out?

Someone mentioned tire noise. The tire noise in ours on concrete is loud enough to be really annoying. I have 2 year old Goodyear G670s on it, inflated to 85 pounds, based on it's measured weight.

Thanks for the input so far. I'd still like to hear more opinions of the driving comfort in Class C vs Class A.

The engine noise is a little obtrusive when climbing grades, but otherwise not a factor.
  • Viability driving is much better in the Class A as you are higher and can see traffic ahead. Also, no overhang to obstruct your sighseeing view as in a class C.

Overall driving difference, to me about the same. Most manufacturers simply do not set up RVs to be the best driving machines. Add ons can help with handling, ie better shocks, sway bars and Steer safe or similar. I know, replacing new shocks should not need to happen but what a difference in ride and handling. Good luck with whatever you decide!
  • I'm not quite sure what you mean by road noise ... but about 80% of the noise inside of our Ford E450 Class C when going down the road is coming from all of our "stuff" we have stashed around inside and on the cabinets. The other about 20% of the noise is from the air flowing around the outside of the coach and the V10 gas engine whirring when climbing grades. We don't have any noise from the tires. :)
  • I have had them both. Visibility and moving around,(while underway), in the coach in a class A is better. However, road comfort, handling and drive ablitity in the class C was better. Fueling up was easier in the Class C, towing a car was about the same. Obtaining service in the Class C was far easier. IMHO
