Cleaning Water Jugs

We have a couple of 6 gallon Water Jugs(Camco) that I’d like to clean/disinfect the inside of. So we can use these to add additional water to the camper. What’s the best way? We have a water filter, but won’t attach to the water jugs. Thank you

Put a few granules of hot tub sodium dichlor in the jugs. Don't have to deal with trying to get rid of the bleach taste.

To each his own but there's this warning on Sodium Dichlor; Harmful if swallowed. Ingestion may cause immediate pain and severe burns of the mucous membranes.

    Same warning as with bleach.

I'm sorry... I've drunk out of too many garden hoses. When I finish using my extra water containers, I rinse them and let them dry out and then recap them. When I want to use them again, I just rinse them out several times and use them. Been doing that for a couple decades. Not dead yet!

    Me too.

You must let then get really dry.

If they are dry then a lot of nasty things can not live without water for very long.
  • Personally if this were something I needed to do regularly I'd grab some Starsan. It's a chemical disinfectant that's safe to drink, it's used in the brewing and wine industry to disinfect equipment used to hold or measure beer and wine.

Yep, which is why I don't use bleach either.

I'm in that camp too, however the OP didn't ask whether they should, they asked how.
  • I store mine filled with chlorinated city water. When I'm going to use them again, I empty rinse and refill.

It's a 6-gallon jug. Dump a "glug" of bleach (yes, that's a scientific measurement:)) into the jug, fill with water, cap it, slosh it around, let it sit for an hour or so, then dump. Rinse several times till you don't smell bleach. Geez, we sure spend a lot of time over-complicating things.

Think about it this way...if tieing your shoes was easy for everyone, velcro shoes wouldn't exist. But they do...
