I like my alarms separate - so I can tell WHY it is alarming... I use a Kidde battery-powered CO alarm with a digital read-out, so there is no drain on my single house battery. The propane detector is still 12V off the house battery. Whether 12V or battery, the sensors in any of these units wear out (read: become less sensitive) over time, same with smoke detectors. Hence the 7 year expiration timeframe. No different than ones in your stix and brix... ST
