The other topic about coffee brought this question to mind...We use a french press while camping.I'm looking for a coffee grinder that makes medium to largish grounds so the filter in the french press does a better job. We have been buying the pre-ground coffee for our trips, but don't like the grounds in our cups of coffee. I'm not sure if we should have a small (non-electric) one to bring with us and grind new beans every day - or - one to leave at home and bring a jar of grounds with us.Any suggestions?

The Compresso Burr grinder is a great coffee grinder. It grinds at whatever fineness you want.

You want a burr grinder of some type. You can sometimes find them at specialty kitchen stores or on Amazon.

Grabbed a little antique hand grinder from some shop years back. Works like a champ, grind is coarse and take no power other than muscle so is good for boondocking. $12 or thereabouts.

You can use almost any grinder as long as you vary the time of grind. We use an electric Hamilton Beach and grind for 5-6 seconds giving a good course grind for French press. Many groceries still have bagged beans with a grinder on the shelf to grind the beans to the coarseness you require.

Has anyone attempted to roast their own green beans while camping?

If so, what utensils have you used and what type of beans did you buy?

I use a blade grinder while camping. Just a bit of practice and you will figure it out.
I roast at home using a hot air popcorn popper. As to the bean,it depends
Lately I have been partial to Guatemala Huehuetenango Michicoy for a good stiff breakfast and morning drink and a Kenya Kaffa for the evening wind down.

The way people on here whine and cry about every other remotely possible way to feel slighted,I am sure that your smoky coffee roasting would be subject to a whole new thread!
