Soon I need to buy a container of white gas at Walmart. I haven't check price but in the past their price is crazy. Many moons ago I remember when i was a boy, Dad stopped by gas station to fill up white gas. Usually behind of station. Anyway now day you don't see that anymore. Is there any kind of gas which is same as white gas? What about denatured alcohol? Thank for your time!
First, do NOT try to use alcohol. Alcohol is not "gas".
Back in the day, white gas was regular gas that didn't have tetra ethyl lead added as an anti-knock additive. It also didn't have dye in it; hence it was colorless or "white". That lead would foul a gas lantern or stove in a hurry.
Since refiners stopped putting lead in the gas you can use regular ol' pump gas in your lantern or stove. In theory, the 10% ethanol (alcohol) content will make it a little harder to light.
