While backing and towing is the same in theory, backing is a reasonably significant and developed "organic" skill that's ingrained in you mind.
The "tail swing effect" from a trailer hitch is actually a tad reversed on a fifth wheel...and I find I miss that when backing a goose neck...it is of practical significance and takes some getting used to.
And indeed the tail swing of the hitch helps the trailer keep wider as you make tight turns.
