Considering RV hauling; need some advice

Didn't know which forum to post this in, and seemed as good as any.

Asking for advice, not the validity of what I'm attempting, as I know pretty well what I'm in for. I have a ton of recreational hauling experience, but this is a whole other realm of requirements.

I've been working for 28 years non-stop for others; recent events have given me the opportunity to make a change, and I want to start having more control over my employment. Figure it's also about time the truck started paying for itself.

I have nearly everything needed to get started, thanks to my folks, who did this for years. I won't make a ton of money; since I already have a steady source of income from retirement, all I expect is to make a bit more than breaking even. An added benefit is travel; I get to see new places, and as often as I wish, while getting paid for it.

A couple of questions/concerns:

- this will be for a commercial carrier, which has (seemingly) tons of rules. Most are pretty straight forward, but the one I'm most concerned with is the sleep requirement; the couch is an option, but may be too hot in summer, so that leaves the truck, which is a tiny quad. The truck is also a family hauler, so I can't do a full on conversion. Does anyone have any reversible tricks to making it more comfy back there?
- I live near P-Cola, and the distance to the depot is over 800 miles. I don't like wasting money dead-heading (not tax deductible) and am looking at ways around this. Anyone have clever ways to turn that mileage into a tax deduction (charity hauling comes to mind).
- I plan on leaving my fiver up there; I know you can write off some of the rig, but are there any other tax breaks available for doing that (web search proved fruitless)?
  • I have also thought about doing something like this. I'd do it if I was retired and wanted to travel...sadly that's not the case. I have seen folks remove the backseats in their trucks and put beds in. Sadly, I don't remember where I was reading about that. Does that help almost none? :)

You could also look into mounting a generator in the truck and run that A/C in the camper. I know mine ran all day and into the night and never came close to running out of fuel. That was after the freak hail storm. I'd bolt it down so it can't roll off (if you know what I mean).

    My two cents FWIW...
