Constant breakage. Tiring.

RV's have all the parts and appliances of a sticks & bricks home, but then we take it across the roads and shake the s**t out of it.

welcome to NO QUALITY CONTROL rule 101 at rv factory if its rolling at the end of the line??? it a pass. I do agree its a pain. but its part of ownership.

If you are not working on an rv, you probably do not own one. Its a house on wheels and you shake it every use.

I have had an RV of some sort since 1977. In that time I can't recall a trip that didn't require breaking out my tool box for something.

Maybe that's why Ford (Fix or Repair Daily) got into the TC business. It fits their business plan! Ha ha ha

Whenever someone asks me about buying any RV and hitting the road my first reply is...
'Are you a handyman?'

WELL, I HAVE a NEWMAR. And, I could write a whole page on how it forced me to learn a lot more about fixing RV things,....more than the previous five SoB's ever taught me. I thought I was expert, but now it's clear, either you never quit learning, or you quit.
Forget quality control. It's more important for the manufacturer to first make sure that the primary structure be of sound design AND that the appropriate materials are expertly selected. THEN, you can talk about quality control in the construction.
I would have to write a book in order for me to explain specifics.

Set the date on the Wayback Machine to your first RV: a station wagon and a tent. A tool kit may have included a Swiss Army Knife and a Leatherman Tool. The tent needed seam sealer to keep the water out. 60 MPH gusts from a thunderstorm blows it down and bends all the tent poles. The lantern needs new mantles. You replace them and while you are lighting them for the first time, you burn your finger and the glass globe goes flying and smashes. The air mattress has a slow leak that leaves you laying on the hard ground by 4 AM. There were moments, but most of the camping drama was provided by wandering bears, marauding raccoons, thieving crows and a wide variety of critters.

Fast forward three or four decades and several RVs later, the tool kit has gotten substantially larger and may include power tools. I too have declared that I feel like the janitor every time we go rolling down the road. I said that I am done, no more. You know how they say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? I must be certifiable; we're expecting a new motor home to arrive from the factory at the end of the month. My tools are packed and ready to go.

One observation that I might offer is that components that make up the RV that are engineered, designed and purpose built are more durable and trouble free. That is not to say that this is immune from faulty design or poor choice in materials. Most of my repairs are to things that are generic off-the-shelf that are adapted for use.

Comparing tenting to RVs, maybe it is the complexity and number of thing that could possibly go wrong that become time consuming that intrudes on your time better spent elsewhere. However, everyone I know and some people I meet all complain about having to get the tools out, but no one has bailed yet.

You all must be very rough on those RV's. The only fixes I've had to do on mine were mostly self-inflicted boo-boos! A "very" few minor touch-ups, like putting some kind of lubricant on the toilet slide because it keeps sticking. Other than that, my on-road-traveling repairs experiences are absolutely nill. I once had a leak at the black tank flusher though, where the hose attaches to the side of the trailer. I put a new one on once home. Does that count?

Our last RV was a '99 Lazy Daze. We were constantly fixing and replacing things. (It was in excellent shape when we sold it last Fall.) We bought new this final round (Winnebago Minnie Winnie 31D) to try to reduce maintenance in addition to upgrading to a different floorplan and other upgrades like slides etc. So far (4 or 5 short trips) so good...there are a relatively few items that need attention under warranty. I say keep fixing and eventually you should hit a plateau and more enjoyment and less maintenance. S+B has a lot of maintenance too.
