You can always try the motel thing and see if it works for you then make a decision.
X2. Have to also agree that investing lots of money into a new rig for just a few times a year isn't worth it. That's one of the reasons we got rid of our Endura-we just weren't using it. I've stayed in a couple of pet-friendly hotels and find it just a bit stressful from the standpoint that if the dog barks you can be thrown out in the middle of the night. It's also highly unlikely that the hotel will let you leave the dog there unattended. As far as the suggestion of renting a cabin at a campground, most do not allow pets. I would also agree with the suggestion to possibly find a good, local kennel or a dog/house sitter. This gives you the freedom to come and go as you please without feeling tied down. I know many can't imagine traveling without their furkids but sometimes a break from all responsibility really does cleanse the soul.
