IMO- we leave our cats (former strays, we weren't cat people) at home with a cat sitter who comes by once or twice a day....very tolerable for them.
leaving our K-9 critters at home, no way-NEARLY never. We'll drive two days on a road trip to avoid the hassle of flying and bring our K-9s.
We stay at LQs plenty, have a Visa card with them, elite member and end up getting quite a few free nights.
