I'm in the same boat. Just sold my trailer and am now car/tent camping with my dogs. I'm getting ready to drive to Alaska and will be camping as well as getting motels. I figure even with the cost of a motel, I can take a lot of trips for the cost of a camper. I love not pulling anything and being able to go wherever I want in my 4X4 SUV. Not pulling anything really opens up a lot of new possibilities.
I would say try it out - stay in a few motels and see how you like it before deciding. I'm not a motel kind of person, but I'm thinking the trade-off will be worth it. If not, I can always get another trailer.
And I second the VRBO suggestion. Also AirB&B.
