I don't know what figures you are using, but the epidemiologists studying this right now estimate that it is 10X more deadly than the common flu.
Mark is correct that we really don't have good numbers because testing has been deficient and it's still early in the course of this outbreak.
Comparing it to regular flu is wishful thinking, best case scenario.
Even if the rate turns out to be the same, this thing is way worse that typical flu because no one has immunity and everyone is a potential patient. With the common flu many people have immunity from previous exposure and from vaccination.
