We travel for about 5 months during the winter. We find using our trailer is a lot less expensive than using motels.
So far this trip for 27 nights we have averaged $17.50 per night. (We have spent a few nights boondocking.
We have towed about 2000 miles at 10 MPG (US) at a cost of around $2/gallon. This is $400. Without the trailer we would have used about 1/2 the fuel so towing fuel incremental is $200 or $7.50 per night.
Depreciation on the trailer is around $10 000. It has been used about 750 nights so depreciation cost is $13.50 per night.
Insurance and licence are very minor.
So this gives a daily cost of around $38.50 per night.
We cook in the trailer so food cost is not different from staying at home.
Travelling using motels would cost 60 to 80 per night. Food would include a lot of eating in restaurants at 50 or more per day. So even if we doubled our current daily RV cost it is still much cheaper than using motels.
Besides being economical we get to stay in areas where we are close to nature - birdwatching, beach walking, desert exploring.
This is our experience as we are into our 6th winter of wandering with our house behind us.
