I think many of us are missing the 800-pound-Gorilla-in-the-room point!
General connectivity costs and speeds in the U.S. are more and slower than in many other parts of the world. Whether particular folks here "can afford it" is irrelevant to this as-usual-rip-off-on-pricing-and-performance-in-the-U.S. issue. Everyone should hate and oppose paying more for something "just because it's normal". For instance, my DISH costs, phone costs, and home Internet costs are special for me because I made a big deal out of them with the companies involved and theatened to go elswhere if they didn't get management involved as necessary to offer me a better price. You gotta speak up and not sit back like sheep and pay what they ask just because you can pay what they ask.
This situation reminds me of our U.S. costs of pharmaceuticals versus their costs for the same product in most of the rest of the world.
